Benedikt Böhm: Speed mountaineering for a good cause
Nepal – once again, speed mountaineer and Dynafit managing director Benedikt “Beni” Böhm is heading to the mecca of high-alpine mountaineering. The expedition to Dolpo in northwestern Nepal kicks off on Sept. 26, 2019. Soon, we’ll let you in on which summit Beni plans to climb with skis.
Speed mountaineering for a good cause: Humla is a poor region where children have little chance for an education. As the father of three little kids, Beni would like to bring attention to these serious shortcomings. Together with Nepal Medical Careflight Association, he will support a privately organized school project. Of course we will also be helping him in this project!
With this expedition, we want to support children in Nepal along with Benedikt Böhm to enable them to have access to a good education. Partner in this endeavor is the registered Nepal Medical Careflight Association with its headquarters in Pfronten in Allgäu.
Donations will get to where they are needed: to the children in Dandaphaya!
Initiated by Brigitte Reininger-Faden and her Nepalese godson Surajan Shahi, the school in Dandaphaya was built with passion and commitment. It is to this day managed by the association. Now, approximately 200 children attend the elementary and secondary school there. An affiliated home for mothers and their children with medical support offers needy families access to urgently needed care.

Albert-Schweitzer Children’s Village and Family Facility
The non-profit Albert-Schweitzer Children’s Village and Family Facility organization is actively committed all across Germany to helping disadvantaged children, youth and families. In particular young people in difficult life situations are assisted with a variety of offerings. The emphasis in the process is on creating positive life conditions and future potential. The heart of the Albert-Schweitzer Children’s Village and Family Facility are the children’s villages that house kids and youth, who for different reasons cannot grow up with their parents.
Alpine crossing on touring skis – the route
210 kilometers and 14,500 meters of vert – For this route from Ruhpolding to Kasern recreational athletes need approximately five to seven days. Beni is aiming for the magic time limit of 36 hours, non-stop. Already, back in 2006, Beni did this same route on touring skis together with five colleagues. With the name of “Hannibal,” the six athletes broke the then-record time of three days for the route.
Beni will not be alone this time either. A few days before March 9, a six-person scouting team will run the complete route and set ski tracks so on D-Day Beni “only” has to ski. Also, during the project, two experienced mountain guides will also always be at Beni’s side to ensure his safety. The risk of complete exhaustion is very big during this project.
The course is divided into eight stages with aid and gear stations at every section. There, Beni can warm himself, get aid, change clothes and, if needed rest a bit briefly, during the SPEED Transalp.

100% of the revenue from the headbands will go directly to the children at the Dandaphaya School in the Humla Region of Nepal, where the money will be used for schoolbooks and other educational materials. The Nepal Medical Careflight Association who not only built the school, but still operates it will be responsible for the allocation of all funds raised.

A new record-setting attempt by speed mountaineer Beni
Beni is on his way to Northwestern Nepal. There, he will climb Dhaulagiri VII, also known as Putcha Hiunchuli. He will attempt to climb from the base camp at 4,930 meters to the 7,246-meter-high summit in less than eight hours, and then return to base camp again on skis.
Dhaulagiri VII – The Challenge
Dhaulagiri VII is a thrilling mountain for ski touring and ideal for a speed expedition. It is located in the far west of the Dhaulagiri-Himal chain of mountains and is not a relatively difficult mountain to climb. However, this 7,000er is a special ski touring challenge because of its extended ascent and the region’s remoteness. The classic route leads over the North face, while the northwest flank with fewer fissures is better suited for climbing on skis. Base camp is located as a rule at about 4,900 meters, and as a rule, experienced alpinists pass through two or three high camps on their way to the summit. However, for those that know Beni know that he loves speed mountaineering, a style he has ascribed to and practiced for more than 20 years. That’s why he’s setting out to reach the 8-hour mark for Dhaulagiri VII.
