Here’s how to properly care for your ski touring equipment!
Winter is almost here, and you can hardly wait for the first ski tour of the season. To have the best ski tour experience, your equipment must be properly cared for. That’s how to extend the life of your gear and ensure that you can count on it in every situation. Touring skis
Before you head out on your first ski tour of the season, check your ski base for scratches and dings. If you have waxed your skis over the summer, then the wax must first be removed well and brushed away. Take note: If there are any wax remains, your skins may not stick well.
During the season, dry your touring skis after every tour with a soft cloth. That prevents rust spots and keeps the steel edges sharp longer. If your skis are dirty, you can clean them any time with sudsy water with mild soap. As soon as the base turns white, it is time for another round of wax. And if you notice the skis are gliding as well anymore, you should apply wax.
In the spring or if there is wet snow, a rough textured finish is essential. To do that, the base is smoothed with a stone grind and then textured. Only then can an accumulated film of water be removed.
If you ski down a lot on-piste or in icy conditions, you should have your edges checked out more frequently by a professional edge service. These conditions demand more from them and the edges can more quickly become dull.
Fundamentally, touring skis should always be stored dry at room temperature, not exposed to direct UV rays. During their “summer rest,” you should also generously wax the ski base including the edges. Wax protects the base in the summer from drying out and the edges from rust spots. You can use a more cost-efficient base wax for this.
Ski touring boots
Before the start of the season, you should have the buckles as well as the ski-walk mechanism checked for proper function. Only when they perform flawlessly, can you head out on a tour.
After every tour, you should take care to remove your liners from the shell to dry. What is essential is to not place the liner directly on a stove or heater. If the liner is thermo-moldable, it can become misshapen with high heat and may not fit your feet as well. In case of heavy dirt, the boots can be cleaned with warm water and a brush.
When your ski touring boots are not being used, they should be stored in a dry place away from direct light. Be sure the shell and liners are completely dry. Reassemble the boot again and close the buckles and straps on the lowest tension.
Bindings
Have your bindings checked by an authorized dealer before the start of a season or as needed and have the settings checked. Check your bindings regularly yourself to discover any rust spots, cracks, or deformation early. Always seek out an expert in case of damage. Be sure to protect your bindings during transport from salt and dirt. It is better to transport your skis inside the care than on the roof.
Storing your bindings in a frost-free, dry room is especially important. Store your pin bindings with the least amount of tension as possible. Avoid keeping the springs under tension. To that end, close the toe pieces without locking them and set the heel units to ski mode.
Skins
After your ski tour you should always allow your skins to dry at room temperature before you fold them up.
Take note: Never place your skins on a heater since that will damage the adhesive. Items such as small stones or grass stuck to the skins or the adhesive layer should be removed to prevent damage.
From time to time, the adhesive must be renewed, e.g., in the case of heavy dirt or when skins no longer adhere properly.
Caution: If a place on the skis is already very dried out, then the adhesive can no longer be replaced since there will be no bond between skin and adhesive. It is best to have the experts at our Competence Centers replace your skin adhesive.
When they are dry, fold them in half, and then fold them with the adhesive sides over each other. Then you are ready to pack them up and store them in a skin bag in a clean, cool, dry place. That also holds true for the summer.
